83 Movie: Who is playing who revealed | Reel vs Real

Just when the Indian Cricket Team was in the middle of one of the most intense cricket matches – India vs Pakistan in the World Cup, Ranveer Singh joined the commentary team to lighten the mood. But what was the versatile actor doing on the cricket field? Well, he is taking us back to India’s first ever World Cup triumph in 1983 with the ’83 movie.

Yes, the movie ’83 is based on India’s historic and dramatic World Cup win in 1983 when they beat the mighty West Indies in the final at the Lord’s. It was a collective performance from the team as they also beat heavyweights like Australia and England on course to the title. So let us get to know the ‘Reel’ World Cup Winning squad and compare them a little with the ‘Real’ squad:

Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev:

The ever-animated Ranveer Singh will play the role of the captain of India’s World Cup winning squad – Kapil Dev. The actor will recreate Kapil Dev’s number of memorable moments from the World Cup like 175 not out against Zimbabwe and a stunning catch to dismiss Viv Richards in the final.

Dev led India from the front in the World Cup, finishing as the team’s top scorer with 303 runs and taking 12 wickets in eight matches. Ranveer has spent a lot of time with Kapil Dev to get into the character and even had proper training in order to pick up the former captain’s batting and bowling style.

Saqib Saleem as Mohinder Amarnath:

The Man of the Match in the semi-final and the final of the 1983 World Cup, Mohinder Amarnath, will be played by Saqib Saleem. The 31-year actor faces a huge challenge of portraying the legendary ‘Jimmy’, India’s one of the best batsman against pace bowling. Saqib has so far worked in Bollywood movies like Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, Dishoom and Race 3. He is also the younger brother of Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi.

Amarnath was the architect of India’s victory against West Indies in the final, with his all-around performance. He played the inning of 26 against the legendary pace-attack before taking three wickets to bundle them on 140.

Nishant Dahiya as Roger Binny:

Nishant Dahiya, Saqib’s co-actor in the movie Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge will share the big screen once again, playing the role of Roger Binny. The medium pacer was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets in 8 games.

Binny had a huge role in India’s successful campaign, with 4/29 against Australia in the group stages, 2/43 in the semi-final and a crucial wicket of West Indies captain Clive Lloyd in the final.

Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal:

Popular Punjabi singer and actor Harrdy Sandhu will play the role of yet another front-line Indian bowler in the World Cup, Madan Lal. Sandhu was a pace bowler in his early years as well but had to leave cricket due to an injury. And what better way to return to the cricket field than playing the role of Madan Lal.

Madan Lal will always be remembered for snatching the ball from Kapil Dev’s hands to bowl yet another over to Viv Richards in the final. The bowler did take Richard’s wicket in that over and finished with 3/31. But that wasn’t his only impressive performance. Madan Lal was the second highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 17 wickets in eight matches.

Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar:

The legendary batsman was below par throughout the 1983 World Cup, scoring just 59 runs in six games. But India’s two losses during the campaign, against West Indies and Australia, came when Gavaskar was dropped from the playing XI. The legend has it that Sunny was considered lucky by the team management was not dropped for the rest of the tournament. As it turned out, Gavaskar was indeed a lucky charm!

Tahir Raj Bhasin will play the Little Master’s role in the movie. The 32-year old actor has been a part of a number of successful movies like Kai Po Che, Force 2, Mardaani and Manto.

Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma:

Our very own Bunty from the Sacred Games, Jatin Sarna will play the role of middle-order batsman Yashpal Sharma. Sarna was widely praised for his role in the Netflix series and will be expected to deliver yet another fine performance in the ’83 movie.

Yashpal Sharma was the one to start India’s World Cup campaign with a bang as they staged an upset against West Indies in the first game of the tournament. Sharma was the Man of the Match for his inning of 89 in that game and eventually finished the tournament as India’s second-leading run scorer, 240 runs in eight games.

Sahil Khattar as Syed Kirmani:

Known for his YouTube channel ‘Being Indian’ and host of various Sports and reality shows, Sahil Khattar will be behind the stumps playing the role of Syed Kirmani. Khattar will be making his big screen debut with ’83.

Kirmani won the ‘Best Wicketkeeper of the Tournament’ for his 12 catches and 2 stumpings. He was also a reliable lower-order batsman throughout the tournament, especially famous for his 24 not out against Zimbabwe during the unbeaten partnership of 126 with Kapil Dev for the ninth wicket.  

Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu:

A household name in the Punjabi Film Industry, Ammy Virk will play the role of 1983’s World Cup swing-king Balwinder Sandhu. Famous for his wicket of Gordon Greenidge with an inswinging delivery in the final, Sandhu took 8 wickets in the tournament.

Chirag Patil as Sandeep Patil:

Who better to play your role than your son? Marathi actor Chirag Patil will make his Bollywood debut in the ’83 movie playing his father, batsman Sandeep Patil.

Patil senior was an integral part of India’s middle order in the World Cup, scoring 216 runs in the tournament. Chasing 214, his knock of 51 not out of just 32 balls led India to victory in the semi-final against England.

Dhairya Karwa as Ravi Shastri:

Known for his role of Sartaj Singh in the movie URI, Dhairya Karwa will play Ravi Shastri in his second movie. Dhairya was also a part of the recently launched web series ‘Made in Heaven’.

The current coach of the Indian Cricket Team, Shastri played various roles in the 1983 World Cup. He opened for the team when Sunil Gavaskar was dropped for two games and also took 4 wickets in the tournament including 3/26 in the very first game against West Indies.

Jiiva as Krishnamachari Srikkanth:

An explosive opening batsman, Kris Srikkanth will be portrayed by a famous name in the Tamil Film Industry. Amar Choudary or simply, Jiiva will fill in the shoes of the man who was India’s top scorer in the final with an inning of 38.

Srikkanth played as an opening batsman in all eight games and scored 156 runs while facing some of the best pace bowlers of West Indies, England, and Australia.

Dinker Sharma as Kirti Azad:

Yet another actor from the recently released web series, Netflix Special Delhi Crime, Dinker Sharma will play the role of Kirti Azad. Now a full-time politician, Azad was part of the playing XI for the last three games of the tournament.

The off-spinner took just one wicket in the tournament but it was a huge wicket of Ian Botham in the semifinal against England.

Adinath Kothare as Dilip Vengsarkar:

One of the finest Indian batsman of all time, Dilip Vengsarkar’s World Cup was, unfortunately, cut short due to an injury in the group stage game against West Indies. Famous Marathi actor Adinath Kothare will reprise his role in what is his Bollywood debut.

Vengsarkar could only play two games of the tournament before West Indies fast bowler Malcolm Marshall hit him on the face in the group stage game. The right-hander had to leave the field on 32 not out and played no further part in the tournament.

Mali Marshall, the son of Malcolm Marshall, will feature in the role.

R Badree as Sunil Valson:

How about winning the World Cup without even making an ODI debut at all! Sunil Valson, the pace bowler from Delhi was the only squad member to not play a single game in the tournament. Not only that, but Valson never made his ODI debut, creating a unique record of winning the World Cup without ever playing in the international cricket.

South Indian actor, R Badree will play the role of the man who made life better for quiz makers.

Pankaj Tripathi, one of the most versatile and finest actors in the past few years will play the role PR Man Singh, manager of the Indian team during the 1983 World Cup.

Deepika Padukone as Romi Bhatia:

Deepika Padukone will play the role of Romi Bhatia, Kapil Dev’s wife. It will also be her first instance of playing Ranveer Singh’s wife post their much-talked wedding last year.
