Movie Biopics, especially sports biopics have become the flavour of the season for Bollywood industry. Thanks to the success of films like Paan Singh Tomar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Mary Kom, MS Dhoni – The Untold story, and Dangal, filmmakers are itching to document the hardships of Indian sports stars.
Among the already released sports biopics, MS Dhoni’s untold story and Dangal were the most successful sports movies. As far as Dangal is concerned it not just created Box Office record garnering around Rs. 400 crore in India, but the movie became the most watched International film in China. Aamir Khan who was also the producer of Dangal essayed the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film highlighted the making of Geeta and Babita who gave India numerous medals at international wrestling events.
Indian players sports biopic like Mary Kom and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag were also appreciated by critics and fans. Actor, director, producer, singer and writer Farhan Akhtar portrayed the legendary Milkha Singh. Mary Kom was played by Priyanka Chopra who was also nominated for the national award for her part.
Paan Singh Tomar played by Irfan Khan showcased how a national athlete turned dacoit, and what led to his rise as the most feared ‘Daku’ during that period. Chak De India, though not a sports biopic, traced the journey of Indian women hockey team and how they managed to win the world cup. The film’s leading man Shahrukh Khan played the role of hockey coach Kabir Khan. The movie was well appreciated from all strata of society. Shahrukh won many awards for the movie.
And how can we forget the docudrama Sachin – A billion Dreams. Though it was not a full-fledged Bollywood movie, but fans supported it. Upcoming Indian Players Sports Biopic
Balbir Singh Dosanjh Biopic
The biopic called GOLD is based on the life of India’s greatest center forward Balbir Singh Dosanjh and Indian hockey team.
After delivering box office hits like Baby, Airlift and Rustom, superstar Akshay Kumar will be seen in yet another film with a patriotic theme. The sports biopic is a period film set in the backdrop of the 1948 London Olympics. The movie narrates the story of independent India’s first gold medal win at the Olympics.
In 1948, independent India’s hockey team led by Balbir Singh Dosanjh, won gold at the London Olympics. ‘Gold’ would be the next addition in a long list of historical sports films like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Lagaan.
Produced by Excel Entertainment, the film will be directed by Reema Kagti who directed Aamir Khan’s suspense thriller Talaash. This is Akshay’s first movie with Excel and director Reema Katgi. Gold will release on 15th August 2018.
Other than Akshay Kumar the film also stars Kunal Kapoor, Amit Sadh, Mouni Roy and Nikita Dutta.
Abhinav Bindra Biopic
Second on the list of Indian players sports biopic is the Abhinav Bindra movie. The biopic on the Olympic Gold medal winning shooter is in the pipeline. Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor will be playing Abhinav Bindra. He has already started the preparations for the role and is doing the rounds of many shooting circuits around India.
The film is supposedly based on Bindra’s autobiography, ‘A Shot at History: My Obsessive Journey to Olympic Gold’. The movie will be directed by Kannan Iyer and the producers want to release it in the second half of 2018.
Producer Prerna Arora is backing the sports biopic on the life and times of the Olympic gold medalist shooter. She says “It is a difficult project as the makers have to be cautious while presenting the story in an honest way.”
It is the first time Prerna is working on a sports biopic. She believes that a lot of responsibility comes with such films, as projecting a national sports icon in a creative form is not easy. Bindra made India proud in 2008 by winning gold in the 10 m Air Rifle event at the Beijing Olympic Games. With the marvelous achievement, he became the first Indian shooter to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games.
The Saina Nehwal Biopic
The first Indian badminton player to win an Olympics medal, Saina Nehwal is already a legend.
The star Indian shuttler, who secured a Bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, is also the winner of numerous Commonwealth medals. Along with that she has represented India at Asian Games as well BWF World Series.
The role of Saina will be played by actress Shraddha Kapoor. She is the daughter of actor Shakti Kapoor. Shraddha has already started her preparation for the role and is learning professional badminton. Along with that she is frequently meeting Saina to know more about shuttlers personal behavior and is also close to the Nehwal family.
A September 2018 release date has been set by the Producers.
The Pullela Gopichand Biopic
One of the greatest Indian sportsperson of all time Pullela Gopichand created history by winning the All England Badminton Championship. He became only the second Indian after Prakash Padukone to win the prestigious tournament. After retiring as an active player, Gopichand could not keep himself out of the badminton court. He trains young shuttlers at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.
After guiding PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal to Olympic medals, his fans were expecting someone to make a movie on his life. According to film industry reports, the Gopichand biopic will be directed by Praveen Sattaru. The movie will be made in three languages: Telugu, Hindi and English.
South actor Sudheer Babu has been roped in for the project. And, if everything falls in place for the producers, the Gopichand biopic would be released by the year end or early 2019.
The Dhyan Chand Biopic
Next on the list of Indian players sports biopic is the most influential field hockey player of all time, Dhyan Chand. The fans are still wondering why till date no one made a movie on India’s greatest hockey player. But the audience can cheer up now as the Biopic is in the pipeline.
An exciting fact is that former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni is set to produce the film. He has already bought the rights from filmmaker Karan Johar, who was supposed to produce the movie. The Dhyan Chand biopic will be directed by Rohit Vaid. Young heartthrob Varun Dhawan is set play the legendary hockey players role.
An enthusiastic Rohit Vaid revealed the number of years he has invested on his ambitious project. “It took me five years to do research on Dhyan Chand as nobody had a clue about him anymore and there’s hardly anything in his autobiography. We spoke to his son Ashok Dhyanchand and to many people in India and Pakistan. What we have now is very exciting.”
The release date is not confirmed yet.
Kapil Dev and the 1983 Indian Cricket team Biopic
Former Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev is undoubtedly the greatest all-rounder the world has ever seen. His heroics in the 1983 cricket world cup are still fresh in our memories. And who can forget the running catch he took to dismiss the legendary Viv Richards.
So, when talking about sports biopics how can Bollywood miss the captain under whom the Indian cricket team won their first World Cup? Yes, a biopic on Kapil Dev and the 83 world cup winning team is on the cards. His role will be played by none other than Ranveer Singh.
Filmmaker Kabir Khan announced the film with actor Ranveer Singh. However he pointed out that the film is not a Kapil Dev biopic, but will trace the journey of India’s first ever world cup win. The audience is excited about the film’s developments.
According to industry reports, the film will start rolling in mid-2018. The makers took to Twitter to reveal that the film will hit the theatres on 09th April 2019. Apart from Ranveer, who is playing Kapil Dev, no other actor has been cast as yet.
Biopic of PV Sindhu
Looks like badminton players are the favorites of Bollywood filmmakers when it comes to Indian players sports biopic. Not only Gopichand and Saina Nehwal, but a P.V. Sindhu’s biopic is also in the pipeline.
Actor Sonu Sood who turned producer with a film called ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’ is working on his next production. The movie he wants to make is based on the life of Olympics medalist PV Sindhu. Sonu wants to cast actress Deepika Padukone, daughter of famous former badminton player Prakash Padukone, in the lead role. Deepika before becoming an actor was a national level Badminton player, so essaying Sindhu won’t be a hard task for her.
Sindhu became the first ever shuttler from India to win an Olympic silver medal.
“I would love to see Deepika playing the character of Sindhu in my film. She is a fine actress. We are still in scripting stage. If the part is offered to her and she likes the script and the director and has the time for it, she will surely give her nod,” Sonu said.
Other than these 7 Indian players sports biopic, audience will also see movies made on Indian women cricket team captain Mithali Raj, and the great PT Usha. ‘Flicker’ – the biopic on former Indian hockey team captain Sandeep Singh also releases this year.
The Indian filmmakers are also highlighting disabled athletes. Murlikant Petkar, who won a Paralympic Gold in 1972 and set a world record in the 50m freestyle will also be showcased. Sushant Singh Rajput is said to portray his role.
