The official player auction list for the IPL 2024 (Indian Premier League (IPL)) was unveiled on Monday, December 11. A total of 333 players are set to be auctioned in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19. Each of the 10 franchises is eager to secure formidable players to enhance their prospects in the prestigious competition. Among the 333 players, 214 hail from India, while 119 are international cricketers, including two from associate nations. The auction will feature 116 capped players and 215 uncapped players, incorporating the two cricketers from associate nations.

With 333 players securing spots in the ultimate roster, only 77 slots can be occupied in the auction, including 30 designated for overseas players. In terms of pricing tiers, 23 players have enlisted in the top base price category of ₹2 crore, while 13 cricketers have established their starting price at ₹1.5 crore. Although the IPL 2024 auction will feature numerous renowned international players, some notable foreign names are notably absent. Here, we highlight five significant overseas players who are missing from the IPL 2024 auction list.

The absence of England’s pace bowler, Jofra Archer, is notably conspicuous in the list of overseas cricketers for the IPL auction. Despite being acquired by Mumbai Indians (MI) for ₹8 crore in the IPL 2022 auction, he couldn’t participate in the entire season due to injury. Archer, a right-arm fast bowler, featured in only five matches for MI in 2023 before heading home for further rehabilitation. Unfortunately, his performance during the season wasn’t at its peak, managing just two wickets with an economy rate of 9.50. Consequently, the franchise opted not to retain Archer when they announced the IPL 2024 retention list.

In recent weeks, there have been indications that the 28-year-old fast bowler, known for his susceptibility to injuries, may be excluded from IPL 2024. This is reportedly due to the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) interest in managing his workload leading up to the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have excluded the powerful Sri Lankan batsman Bhanuka Rajapaksa from their retention list for IPL 2024. Rajapaksa, known for his hard-hitting style, did not make it to the player auction list unveiled on Monday. Despite an impressive performance in IPL 2022, where he scored 206 runs in nine matches at a remarkable strike rate of 159.69, the 32-year-old has been released by the franchise. In the preceding season, he contributed 71 runs across four matches with a strike rate of 114.52, with a notable half-century in one of the innings.

Marnus Labuschagne

Marnus Labuschagne, a standout performer for Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup, will once again be absent from the IPL as he did not make it to the final auction list. Despite entering the IPL 2022 auction with a base price of ₹1 crore, the right-handed batsman remained unsold. Despite his reputation as one of Australia’s most talented batters, the 29-year-old has only participated in one T20I match for the national team. Nevertheless, Labuschagne continues to contribute to the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League (BBL). With 1008 runs in 41 T20 appearances at a strike rate of 126, he has also showcased his leg-spin skills by taking 24 wickets.

Usman Khawaja, an experienced Australian cricketer, currently leads the Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. He also had a successful stint with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, despite his notable contributions in various leagues, Khawaja hasn’t garnered much attention in the Indian T20 league. In the 2016 IPL season, he represented Rising Pune Supergiant, playing six matches and accumulating 127 runs, with his highest score being 30. Despite this, Khawaja hasn’t been featured in any subsequent IPL seasons. Throughout his T20 career, the left-handed batsman has participated in 116 games, amassing 3255 runs at a strike rate of 130.25, including three centuries and 16 half-centuries.

Chris Gayle

It would not have been unexpected to see West Indies cricket icon Chris Gayle included in the IPL 2024 auction. Despite being 44 years old, he has not officially retired. Past performances from players like Pravin Tambe and Brad Hogg in the IPL have demonstrated that age, particularly beyond 40, should not be a limiting factor. Gayle, often referred to as the “Universe Boss,” last participated in the IPL during the 2021 season with PBKS. Across 10 matches, he accumulated 193 runs with a strike rate of 125.32. In his IPL career spanning 142 games, the Caribbean star has amassed 4965 runs at a strike rate of 148.96, featuring six centuries and 31 half-centuries.
