On the inaugural day of the 37th National Games, Maharashtra’s Dipali Gursale and Prashant Koli from the Services team achieved remarkable feats in weightlifting, securing gold medals. In the women’s 45 kg category, Gursale shattered the national record for snatch by lifting 75 kg. Furthermore, she exhibited exceptional strength and determination by lifting a total of 165 kg, which not only earned her a gold medal but also marked Maharashtra’s first gold victory in this year’s Games.
Chandrika Tarafdar from West Bengal set a new national record in the clean & jerk category, earning herself a silver medal, while T Priya Darshini from Telangana clinched the bronze at the Campal Sports Village. Gursale, representing Sangli district, surpassed Komal Kohar’s snatch record of 74 kg and Jhilli Dalabehera’s overall record of 164 kg. Additionally, Chandrika Tarafdar also shattered Jhilli’s previous clean-and-jerk record of 94 kg.
Subsequently, at the Campal Sports Village, Koli outperformed Mukund Aher from Maharashtra in the men’s 55 kg category, securing the gold medal by surpassing Aher’s national snatch record by one kilogram. Koli achieved a total lift of 253 kg (115 kg in snatch and 138 kg in clean and jerk), adding another gold medal to the Services’ collection. S Guru Naidu from Andhra Pradesh took home the bronze medal.
In the women’s 49 kg division, Gyaneshwari Yadav claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 177 kg. Preeti from Haryana secured the silver with a combined lift of 174 kg, while Jhilli Dalbehera, a former Asian champion in the 45 kg category, earned the bronze medal with a total lift of 167 kg.
