7-0. No that is not the scoreline of a one-sided football contest. It is the number of times India has defeated Pakistan on the World’s biggest cricket stage – the ICC World Cup. Although the India and Pakistan tie has been one of the most anticipated events traditionally, it has rarely been a tight affair, with the Men in Blue overpowering their opponents in Green everytime, almost single-handedly.
And Sunday’s clash wasn’t much different as well. While Pakistan barely put up a show, the Indians were all over the place. Having been asked to bat first, the newly formed opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul made a steadfast start to the contest. Rebuffing any impact on the slight reshuffle in the aftermath of Shikhar Dhawan’s injury, the duo registered a 100-run partnership to lay a solid foundation for the team. After Rahul departed for a well-deserved 57, the onslaught continued from Sharma’s end.
The Hitman had not even crossed his ton and talks had already started on social media that the Indian vice-captain was in mood for another double century. Such are the benchmarks set by the Indian opener. However, Sharma still scored a stupendous knock of 140 off 113 balls. He is now the competition’s second highest run-scorer.
Skipper Virat Kohli too scored a fastwire 77 to see India post 336 runs, their yet another 300+ score this season. Pakistan’s were never going to even going to come close to that target. Afterall, as the ex-captain Misbah-ul-Haq rightfully pointed out, the team itself doesn’t know who their best 6 batsmen are. Although the Fakhar-Babar partnership did raise hope, it wasn’t going to be a far cry for the team. Pakistan ultimately slumped to a 89 run defeat – their seventh against India in the World Cup.
And as you might expect, the Twitter was never going to show mercy on the losing side. Here are the most hilarious reactions:
