The Indian men’s hockey squad has been grouped with arch-rival Pakistan and will play the crucial match of the Asian Games 2023 on September 30. On the other hand, the women’s squad has been grouped with South Korea and Malaysia, among others.
Seated in Group A, alongside Pakistan, the Indian men’s team will face a lineup that includes reigning Asian Games champions Japan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan. Similarly, the women’s team, positioned in Pool A, will be up against Hong Kong and Singapore, in addition to challenging teams like South Korea and Malaysia. On September 27, the Indian ladies will launch their offensive against Singapore.
Harmanpreet Singh is currently leading the squad at the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy stated:
”We are placed along with some strong teams in our pool, including Japan, who won the Gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. But we will treat all teams at par and will not be taking any competition lightly.”
”We are already getting a chance to compete with some of these nations at the Asian Champions Trophy and we will look forward to using this experience to our advantage in the future.
South Korea, Malaysia, China, Oman, Thailand, and Indonesia placed in Group B in the men’s division, while Japan, China, Thailand, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia make up Group B in the women’s division.
Following their match against Uzbekistan, the Indian men’s team is set to compete against Singapore on September 26 and face off against Japan on September 28. Their group stage journey will culminate as they take on Pakistan on September 30 and Bangladesh on October 2.
After bagging the silver in the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, the Indian women’s squad will aim for the gold.
