Anandan Gunasekaran’s Midas touch

Para Athlete Anandan Gunasekaran had opened India’s account at the Military World Games by winning a gold medal at the disabled men’s 100m IT1 event. He clocked 12 seconds at the 100m event to clinch the first of three medals won by him so far.

Following his 100m success, he added another gold to his name by winning the 400m by finishing it in 53.35 seconds. He finished ahead of Colombian athlete Teodicelo who clocked 58.95 seconds. Anandan wasn’t satisfied with just the 2 gold medals. He secured his 3rd gold medal by winning the 200m event as well.

Air Force officer Shivpal Singh registered the 4th gold for India’s tally by winning the javelin throw event. He secured the gold in his first attempt with a score of 83.33, which was enough to finish ahead of his Polish rival Krukowski Marcin who had a score of 78.17 in his second attempt.

Aneesh Kumar Pillai was the 5th athlete to add the win the gold medal for India in the disabled men’s shot put IF1 category registering a throw of 12.76 meters in his 4th attempt.

The 6th gold medal for India came through the hands of Virender, who registered a throw of 11.43 m in the IF5 category.

The only bronze medal of India’s campaign was secured by Gurpreet Singh at the 25m centerfire pistol men’s individual event. However, for Gurpreet and his team-mates Yogesh Singh and Omkar Singh, they missed out on a bronze medal at the 25m centerfire pistol men’s team event.

The Indian contingent has already bettered their previous record of 6 medals at the Military World Games, and with 3 more days still left, we surely are wishing the team wins more medals for the nation!
