In a string of disappointing runs for Saina Nehwal, the experienced shuttler bowed out of ongoing Hong Kong Open after losing to Chinese Teenager Cai Yan Yan. Nehwal lost the game, 21-13, 22-20 after initially coming back in the 2nd set, only to give away her lead.-- Advertisement --
The two shuttlers had squared off against each other last week in the Fuzhou China Open, where the Chinese teenager was victorious. Saina Nehwal has not been her usual self as she has suffered heavy defeats in the second half of 2019. She has now been knocked out in the first round for 8th time this year.
Day 1 update
The first game of the opening day of the Hong Kong Open featured Sourabh Verma. In his men’s singles qualification round, he defeated Thai shuttler Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, 21-15, 21-19 to set up his next round qualifiers against Frenchman Lucas Claerbout. Sourabh progressed to the next round after defeating his French opponent, 21-19, 21-19. He will be facing another Frenchman, Brice Leverdez later on day 2.-- Advertisement --
Day 1 also featured two teams from India in the mixed doubles. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa defeated their Thai opponents Nipitphon Phuangphuapet and Savitree Amitrapai. The Thai duo took the lead in the first set by going up 21-16. The Indian shuttlers, however, made a strong comeback in the 2nd set in a 21-19 to then win the decider, 3rd set 21-17.
There was some disappointment in the air for India, as Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy were defeated 21-10, 21-18 by Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai.
Day 2 update
After Saina Nehwal’s defeat, Sameer Verma was handed a loss by Chinese Taipei shuttler Tzu Wei Wang. The first set finished 21-11 to Tzu, while Sameer made a comeback in the second set winning 21-13. However, he failed to build upon his 2nd set win and fell short in the 3rd set, losing 21-8.
PV Sindhu entered the next round of the Hong Kong Open after winning her first-round 21-15, 21-16 against South Korea’s Ga Eun Kim in the Women’s Singles event. Prannoy HS also progressed to the next round after defeating Chinese shuttler Yu Xiang Huang by 21-17, 21-17 in the Men’s Singles event.
Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy were defeated in the Women’s Double event by their Danish opponents Maiken Fruergaard and Sara Thygesen. The Indian duo lost their match 21-13, 21-12.
Kidambi Srikanth received a walkover after no.1 seed Kento Momota pulled out of their match, which was going to be conducted later in the day.
Playing later in the day, Parupalli Kashyap will be facing Kenta Nishimoto of Japan. Sai Praneeth will take on Yu Qi Shi of China in the men’s single event. While the duo of Satwiksairaj and Chirag Shetty will be facing Japanese duo Takuro Hoki and Yogu Kobayashi in the Men’s Double event.
