Day 1 – 2018 CWG Overview – The Hit’s and the Misses of Indian Athletes

The day 1 of 2018 CWG being hosted in Gold Coast, Australia, saw the Indian weightlifters making the nation proud as they kick-started the camping with one silver and one gold. Reigning world weightlifting champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu and P Gururaja gave India its first couple of medals.

Day 1 – 2018 CWG Overview– Mirabai Chanu wins Gold!

Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu made India proud as she bagged the country’s first gold medal in the women’s weightlifting 48 kg category event of the 2018 Commonwealth Games being held at the Carrara Stadium in Gold Coast, Australia.

On the opening day of the event, Chanu made everything looked so easy as she snapped the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games’ weightlifting record by lifting a total of 196 kg–picking 86 kg snatch and 110 kg in clean-and-jerk.

In her first attempt in snatch, the 23-year-old lifted 80 kg before improving it with 84 kg and 86 kg lifts in her other two attempts.

Meanwhile, Chanu lifted 103 kg in her first attempt at lean and jerk, following it with a lift of 107 kg and then improving it in the third attempt by lifting 110 kg.

The previous best record at the Games was held by Augustine Nwaokolo of Nigeria, who lifted 175 kg in 2010 event.

Accolades are pouring in on Mirabai right from former athletes to the Indian Prime Minister.

Former Olympic Bronze medalist Karnam Malleswari also heaped praise on her saying that weightlifter’s each lift was perfect and that she was going for the gold from the very first attempt.

Talking to ANI, Malleswari said that Chanu passed all her six lifts quiet confidently and that she handled the pressure quiet well.

“She was going for the gold from the very first lift. Her each lift was perfect. She handled it really well. She passed all the six lifts very confidently. I was watching her performance. Chanu is doing pretty well,” the former weightlifter said.

Following Chanu’s spectacular display at Commonwealth Games, Malleswari believes that they could now expect a better performance from her in 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I was very upset with her performance in Rio Olympics. She could have done really well in Rio, but she washed out. However, her performance is getting better with each passing event. So, we can expect a good result from her in Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” she said.

By bagging a gold medal, Chanu handed India their second medal in the competition after weightlifter P Gururaja knocked off India’s medal tally at the Games by clinching a silver medal in the men’s 56kg category.

Gururaja kickstarted the medal campaign by winning Silver.

Weightlifter P Gururaja knocked off India’s medal tally at Commonwealth Games 2018, winning silver, in the 56kg category.

After lifting his best weight of 111kg in the snatch, Gururaja added 138kg in his third attempt in the clean and jerk to end with a total lift of 249kg.

This feat is also his personal best. In 2017, Gururaja had claimed a Commonwealth Championships bronze in Australia.

Day 1 – 2018 CWG Overview – Indian trounce Sri Lanka in Badminton and Table tennis

Saina and Srikanth cleared the first round of their respective matches with ease.

The star-studded Indian Badminton team defeated Sri Lanka in Group A of the mixed team championship, on Day 1 of the Commonwealth Games 2018.

Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won their respective singles matches, while the pairs of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and Ruthvika Gadde, Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, and Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy emerged winners in the Doubles to help India beat Sri Lanka, 5-0.

In Table Tennis as well, India made a winning start by beating Sri Lanka.

After paddlers Manika Batra and Sutirtha Mukherjee won their the singles fixtures, Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Sutirtha Mukherjee emerged winners in the Doubles.

Day 1 – 2018 CWG Overview – Women’s hockey team defeated

The women’s hockey team had a tough outing as they were defeated by Wales in the first match.

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team started off their Gold Coast 2018 XXI Commonwealth Games campaign with a disappointing 2-3 loss to Wales in their first Pool A match of the competition..

It was Wales who scored two goals in the first 26 minutes through Lisa Daley (7′) and Sian French (26′) to take a 2-0 lead, but goals from skipper Rani (34′) and Nikki Pradhan (41′) gave the Indian team a much-needed life-line.

However, Natasha Marke-Jones popped up for the Welsh in the 57th minute to give her team a crucial victory against the world number 10 Indian side.

India’s attacking prowess in the match saw them earn themselves a total of 15 Penalty Corners, but the team only managed to convert one, while world number 26 Wales had rare chances in the final quarter.
