11 Famous brothers in cricket history who glorified the game | KreedOn

Just how big industrialists have inherited businesses from their families, Bollywood has ‘Nepotism’. Politics also has traditional families running the parties. And when politics and Bollywood are involved, Cricket cannot be far behind!. The sport too has players from the same family representing their national squad. However, the only difference here is that here you earn your spot by merit and not because you belong to a family. There have been instances when siblings who had the same passion for the game and the same dream to represent their national team have played together on the same field on the international level. 11Hardik Pandya & Krunal Pandya (India): Brothers in Cricket

Krunal and Hardik Pandya are two of the most popular brothers in cricket in today’s era. They’ve represented IPL’s most successful franchise, Mumbai Indians for 5 consecutive years. The duo also has been part of the winning team in the 2017 & 2019 seasons together.

The elder one, Krunal made his maiden international appearance recently on 4th November 2018 in a T20I against West Indies. Hardik, on the other hand, has been a key part of the Indian team’s success in all three formats since his debut in January 2016. Currently, Hardik is one of the finest all-rounder’s international cricket circuit. He is also representing India in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 in England. The Pandya brothers of Vadodara made their first international appearance together recently in a T20i against New Zealand on 6th February 2019.

10Albie Morkel & Morne Morkel (South Africa): Brothers in Cricket

Morkel brothers have represented the South African cricket team on various occasions. Albie Morkel was an all-rounder and a big hitter of the cricket ball. He was a pretty productive new ball bowler as well. Albie was also part of CSK’s winning team in the 2010 & 2011’s seasons.

Morne was a specialist right-arm fast-medium bowler. He has picked 309 test wickets and is the 5th leading wicket-takers for South Africa.

Albie and Morne’s father, Albert Morkel was a first-class cricketer and appeared in a lot of domestic matches. Both are amongst the top 10 brothers in cricket.

9Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal & Adnan Akmal (Pakistan): Brothers in Cricket

All the three Akmal brothers of Lahore have not played together but have represented the Pakistani cricket team in certain stages of their careers.

Kamran, the eldest of the three brothers in cricket, he made his international debut in 2002 and has made 268 international appearances as of now. He had been Pakistan’s main wicket-keeper for almost 11 years.

Just like his elder brother, Adnan Akmal is also a wicket-keeper batsman. But he has represented Pakistan in only 25 international matches.

Umar, being the youngest of the three, made his international debut in 2009. He is one of the most talented batsmen of Pakistan. However, Umar hasn’t done full justice to his talent and has been in and out of the squad because of his inconsistency with the bat.

8Hamish Marshall & James Marshall (New Zealand): Brothers in Cricket

Hamish Marshall made his international debut in 2000 against South Africa. He has represented New Zealand in over 80 international matches and has scored over 2,000 runs.

James Marshall was also a middle-order batsman but has also opened the innings on some occasions. He has made 20 international appearances. He once scored 161 runs in an innings against Ireland in 2008.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting after an ODI in 2005 admitted that while batting, the Marshall twins got him confused as he wasn’t able to differentiate the two.

7Shaun Marsh & Mitchell Marsh (Australia): Brothers in Cricket

Marsh brothers have played a lot of international cricket matches for Australia together. Their father, Geoff Marsh has represented Australia in 50 tests and 117 ODIs.

The elder one, Shaun is a very dependable left-handed batsman. He scored the most number of runs in the maiden IPL season of 2008 and hence won the orange cap. Shaun has registered 13 centuries in his 124 international appearances.

Mitchell Marsh is a very effective all-rounder. He has represented Australia in all the formats. Mitchell has scored over 3,000 runs and scalped 85 wickets in his 95 international appearances. He was also part of the Australian squad that lifted the World Cup in 2015.

6Brendon McCullum & Nathan McCullum (New Zealand): Brothers in Cricket

McCullum brothers have played almost every international cricket match together between 2009-2016.

Nathan McCullum was an off-spinner and a reliable lower-order batsman. He made his debut in 2009 and picked 121 wickets in his 140 international appearances.

Brendon McCullum was an explosive opener for New Zealand who made his debut in 2002. The right-handed batsman has scored more than 15,000 runs in his 432 international appearances. He has represented a lot of T20 league franchises all across the world. In 2015, Brendon became the first captain to lead New Zealand to a World Cup Final.

5Kevin O’Brien & Niall O’Brien (Ireland)

Next on the list are the O’Brien brothers of Ireland cricket. Kevin & Niall O’Brien have together represented their national team in the ICC World Cup of 2007, 2011, and 2015. Their father, Brendan O’Brien is a former professional Irish cricketer.

Kevin O’Brien is an extremely experienced all-rounder. Kevin is popular for his knock against England in 2011 when he scored the fastest century in World Cup history in just 50 balls. He is also the first Irish cricketer to score a century in Test cricket.

Being the elder of the two, Niall is a more composed and a focussed batsman. Niall has kept the wickets for Ireland throughout his career. He has played more than 176 first-class matches and has scored almost 13,000 runs.

Hussey brothers from Australia together have played a vital role in the Australian team between 2008-2013. Both of them were part of the Australian squad in ICC World Cup 2011.

Mike, the elder of the two, made his debut in 2004 against India. He has had an amazing record for Australia. He has scored more than 12,000 runs in international cricket at an amazing average of 51.4 in test cricket. Mike also has 22 centuries to his name in international cricket. ‘Mr. Cricket’ was also an exceptional fielder.

Unlike his elder brother, David never got the opportunity to play the longer format- test cricket. He was a T20 specialist and a part-time off-spinner who could also be handy with the ball as well.

3Irfan Pathan & Yusuf Pathan (India)

The ‘Pathan Bandhu’ of Vadodara is one of the most popular brother duos in International cricket. Both made their first appearance together in the very famous final of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 against Pakistan. The Pathan brothers made a crucial 53 run stand for the 8th wicket in a very famous T20i victory against Sri Lanka in 2009.

The younger brother, Irfan made his debut in 2003. Irfan Pathan and was the spearhead fast bowler of the Indian team.  He was also an important lower-order batsman and has scored almost 2,700 international runs for India. Irfan has picked up 310 international wickets and is the only bowler to take a hat-trick in the very first over of a test match against Pakistan at Karachi, in the year 2006.

The elder one, Yusuf Pathan is a power-hitter with the bat. He has 2 international centuries to his name. Yusuf made his international debut in the T20 World Cup final in 2007 and has been a member of the winning squads of both ICC World Cup 2007 and ICC World Cup 2011. He was also a handy part-time off-spinner and has picked about 50 wickets in international cricket.

The Flower brothers led the foundation for Zimbabwe cricket during their time in the 1990s. Together, both the batsman have scored 21,608 runs for their nation and were the finest batsmen Zimbabwe has ever produced and one of the best brothers in cricket the world has ever seen.

Andy, the elder one, had been Zimbabwe’s main keeper for more than 10 years. He was Zimbabwe’s captain from 1993-2000. He holds the record for the highest ever test score posted by a wicketkeeper-batsman in an innings of a test(232*).

Grant Flower was middle-order right-handed batsman and made his debut in 1992. He has international 12 centuries to his name. Grant was the first-ever batsman to carry his bat right through the completed innings of an ODI and also the only one to do so in a winning cause.

1Steve Waugh & Mark Waugh (Australia)

The number one on the list of most successful brothers in cricket is the legendary brother duo of Steve and Mark Waugh. They were the first twin brothers to play an international cricket match together.

Steve has represented Australia for 19 years. Steve Waugh has been one of the world’s most successful Test captains with a win ratio of 72%. The legendary Middle-order batsman has 18,500 runs and 35 centuries to his name in his 493 international appearances. He was Australia’s winning captain in the ICC World Cup 1999 and is one of the finest batsmen worlds has ever seen.

Mark Waugh has 16,529 international runs and 38 centuries to his name. Mark was a better ODI batsman than Steve and has 8,500 international runs to his name. Both the brothers were equally good with the bat when it came to winning the games for Australia.
